  • In Soviet Russia

In America, everyone carries national ID cards.  In Soviet Russia…

well crap, that joke just got alot less funny.

I’m sure I’m not the first to apply the genius of Yakov Smirnoff to this situation, but I just couldn’t help myself.

  • Irritation

Fact: I sent my final rent check in well ahead of it’s due date.

Fact: My landlord deposited said check, also well ahead of the check’s due date.

Fact: I have 22 days left on my lease.

Fact: My housemates have found a replacement housemate who has already signed a lease that starts June 1, 2005.

Fact: There are piles of that person’s crap sitting in the “other room (which I think of as a 2nd living room and everyone else thinks of as a place to play Beer Pong) and, more importantly, my bedroom.

I believe these truths to be self evident, and furthermore, if the above-mentioned crap isn’t out of my room when I get home from work, something, possible something bad, is going to happen.  My window if very tiny, but there is a very convenient stairway just oportunity for bad things is somewhat limited.

5/10/05: The stuff is out.  Aparently the new person is staying in an existing housemate’s room until I move out, but that existing housemate hadn’t finished moving out when the new person was moving in, hence the overflow in my room.  They appologised, and I graciously accepted with an “oh, don’t worry about it.

  • You cant stop the signal

Just got back from Bean-town after seeing the preview of Serenity.  Morena Baccarin (Inara) and Sean Maher (Dr. Simon Tam) were there, which was pretty sweet.  We got their autographs as well as free Serenity keychains.  I won’t post any spoilers, lest someone like Tycho check their referrers and decide they must do me physical harm.  I will say this however:  I left the theater shaking and thinking “OMG, WTF, and I will still go see it in the theater.  It was good, if controversial.

The few pictures we took will be up soon.  Special thanks to Noah et al for driving me all over Boston trying to find Alewife Station.

  • Various bits

Jenny scored us tickets to Serenity on thursday.  After having watched the entire sereis in the past two weeks, I can see why Firefly was such a talked about topic on /.. Feel free to be as jealous as Tycho.

Jenny also found my cell phone in Bev’s front yard, and it seems to have survived a day and a half of drizzly weather.  Go Jenny and Audiovox!

The 640×480 images from my phone don’t seem to fit the new layout too well, nor does the banner below.  I’m adding that to my todo list, which means that everyone is just going to have to get used to it.

  • Trackback Spam Redux

EE’s blacklist didn’t seem to do jack for trackback spam.  Twelve hours after turning the blacklist on, I had 33 more of the bloody things.  I checked the EE forums again, and found reference to a setting that randomized the trackback URL, and authorizes each URL for only one use.  This seems to have done the trick – about 24 hours after turning on that, I’m still trackback spam free.

UPDATE: As of 7/1/05, I’m no longer running EE.

  • To live in a home shaped like a dome

For quite some time, I’ve wanted to live in a domed house. Yesterday, I was watching some show on tv about Palm Beach houses, and it mentioned safe rooms (remember the film Panic Room?). Anyway, while searching for safe rooms, I stumbled upon Monolithic Dome Houses, which are similar to geodesic dome houses, but made out of smooth, steel reinforced concrete.

The Monolithic website has calculators on their website for approximating how much the construction for a particualr house will cost. It looks like I’m going to need about $350,000 to build my nearly-indestructable dream home.

  • Correspondence with R. Stevens

My orriginal message to him read:

How does Metal Steve feel about Darrell “Dimebag” Abbott‘s horrific death?

    -Justin

The links are added for my reader’s convenience, and were not part of my orriginal email.  R. Stevens replied:

He’s got original Pantera vinyl on Ebay right now.

Laughing all the way to the bank!

  • Work and Health

I have this theory that there are three factors that keep you healthy:

    • Nutrition
    • Rest
    • Exercise

My theory continues that people can get by with only two of these factors present and accounted for without getting sick.  So as long as I’m getting enough sleep and taking my daily multi-vitamin, I wont get sick.  In fact, I have so little experience with the exercise portion, that I’m not really that sure that it is an important factor.  There could be just two factors and people may need both of them.

Anyway.  I almost got sick.  I hadn’t been taking my vitamin or getting enough sleep and found myself with swelling glands.  I proceeded to drink a gallon of water with about 1000% of the redommended daily ammount of vitamin c and then went to bed and slept in.  The next morning I felt somewhat better, and by the afternoon I felt fine while I also tried other products like Granddaddy Purple Strain that also help me feel better.

Alan joked today, that wouldn’t get any sleep for the rest of the week.  I forget if things are funny because they aren’t true or if things are funny because they are true*.  Eitherway, I’m keeping the vitamin c, antacids, analgesics, icecream** and caffiene handy until finals are over, then I’m going into detox for caffiene again.

  • Content for Fun and Profit

It seems that I finally managed to talk someone else into participating in a crazy, money making scheme (Hi Adam!), and after reading Casey‘s post that touches on his reason’s for website advertising, I just wanted to make mention of this endeavor.

I’m not sure if callblog is simply going to fall to the wayside once we start really working on it or not.  The new site is probably going to take a lot more work then I put in here each day, and it’s also very doubtful that it will even pay for itself.  Perhaps, however, this post per day thing is just practice for the skills I’ll need to be hugely successful.
